History
Originally built in 1783 by Salvador Armijo, Casa Esencia is one of New Mexico’s most historic buildings and a landmark with the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. Originally a privately owned hacienda, the building’s architecture was typical of the time with thick adobe walls, an absence of windows and an enclosed courtyard. Over the years, the building saw multiple renovations including the addition of windows and a wing which allowed the Armijo family to rent rooms to generate additional income. In 1977, after almost 200 years of ownership and residence, the Armijo family sold the building to the Tinnie Mercantile Company of Roswell, NM. The Maria Teresa restaurant, named after a coin, opened later that year. The property changed hands several times before local restaurateur, Larry Guitierrez of Little Anita’s restaurant in Old Town, purchased the building in 1993. Maria Teresa’s featured expensive haute cuisine, but the restaurant began to suffer after the 2001 recession. The doors closed in 2004 and the property sat empty until Heritage Hotels and Resorts purchased the building in November 2008. Heritage Hotels and Resorts is thrilled to bring renewed life to this beautiful and important New Mexico landmark.
